Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Water Resources Sharing Platform: Building Voice, Improving Best Practice
Earlier this year, CICP has initiated a new research project entitled” Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Water Resources Sharing Platform: Building Voice, Improving Best Practice” with the kind support of Oxfam in Cambodia. The project attempts to explore how to support and positively impact the development of this new platform such that the outcomes thereof are both directly beneficial to local, riparian communities. It is also aimed to facilitate increased “voice” on the part of those communities and to determine the most ignored issues that have been highlighted by individuals at the grassroots level, as development and implementation of the platform moves forward.
This study brought together a set of stakeholders representing a diverse set of civil society actors in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam in order to gain their perspectives as to the present state of the Mekong River and their primary concerns. The study has focused on how these actors have engaged with river data dissemination and usage; early warning systems related to flooding, drought, and natural disasters; gender issues; and the challenges that exist for these communities both at present and in the future.
