Vietnam discharges about 1.8 million tons of plastic waste each year. It is one of 20 countries with the largest amount of plastic waste in the world. The current plastic waste pollution in the country is very serious, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE).
To deal with plastic waste problem, MONRE in 2020 cooperated with Dow Vietnam, SCG and Unilever Vietnam to implement the project “Public-private partnership to build circular economy” in plastic waste management with the aim of adding plastic waste to the circular economy. This project will be continued in the coming years, aiming to Vietnam without plastic waste in the environment by 2025. In the 2022 – 2025 period, the project will focus on researching and applying innovative technologies in recycling plastic waste, especially low-value plastic waste, thereby improving the plastic circular economy.
